General
Studies on silver has shown that the precious metal contains ions which have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and antibacterial benefits. These are powerful agents that efficiently work to create an environment to promote healing.
Silverette® have been designed as an anatomical shape of the nipple and the skin in this area in contact with the silver has helped provide relief and repair of the nipple skin at any stage of the breastfeeding journey.
If you have any concerns or if pain persists, please seek help from a medical practitioner or lactation consultant.
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY - Silver is known to have anti-inflammatory benefits that can provide relief from skin experiencing inflammation, soreness or swelling. This is great for mothers whom experience cracks and soreness usually from the result of incorrect latch positioning between mum and baby.
ANTI-BACTERIAL - Silver is known to have properties that help prevent the growth and spread of bacteria. Silverette ® has been a great time saver for mothers to help them heal in between feeds without the worry of sterilisation.
ANTI-FUNGAL - A thrush infection is quite common and can happen if your nipples are sore or cracked. Silver has anti-fungal benefits can prevent fungal growth. You can use Silverette® simultaneously with prescribed treatment by medical professional that supports the recovery of nipple thrush.
ANTIMICROBIAL - Silver is known to have natural antimicrobial benefits that can help minimise the presence of bacteria, mould, and fungi. Using Silverette® may offer a greater level of protection by continuously inhibiting the growth of microbes on surfaces for very long periods of time.
Before being handcrafted in Northern Italy, the silver is acquired through metals agents authorised and controlled by the Italian government. Every batch of silver purchased for manufacturing comes with certification.
925 is the purest solid silver that can be moulded into a shape. There is a more pure level of silver (999-1000) but it is too soft and would be considered as silver plated and not solid silver.
925 silver is an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% Copper. Pure silver is malleable, so copper is added to ensure the cups can be molded into the anatomical shape. Silverette® is safe for mum and baby and is nickel free.
Sore and cracked nipples are a common early breastfeeding challenge, often caused by an imperfect latch between mother and baby. If not addressed, minor irritation can progress into painful cracks that make feeding distressing.
Many mothers initially reach for nipple creams and ointments. While these products can provide a temporary barrier, they must be wiped off before nursing and do not create a sustained healing environment. Silverette® nursing cups offer a different approach. Made from 925 sterling silver, the cups harness silver ions’ natural antimicrobial, anti inflammatory and antifungal properties. When worn between feeds, the anatomically shaped cups cover the nipple and areola, protecting skin from friction while bathing the area in silver ions to help soothe and support healing.
Silverette®’s patented design—developed by neonatologists, midwives and paediatricians—fits comfortably under your bra and allows you to continue working on latch and positioning with professional support . Unlike creams, there is no need to apply or remove anything before feeding, and there is no risk of transferring substances to your baby.
If nipple soreness persists or you have concerns about latch or infection, please consult a lactation consultant or healthcare professional for personalised advice.
Nipple wear and tear – Tender, dry or cracked nipples are common, especially in the early days of breastfeeding or pumping. Silverette® cups can offer relief and work best when worn alone. Avoid pairing them with creams or lotions—these products form a barrier between your skin and the 925 silver surface, reducing the cups’ effectiveness.
Nipple thrush – Thrush is a yeast infection that can cause burning or stabbing nipple pain. Silverette® cups made from 925 silver have natural antifungal properties and can be used alongside the treatment prescribed by your healthcare provider. Always seek medical guidance if you suspect thrush.
Mastitis – Mastitis is a painful inflammation of breast tissue that may require antibiotics. The anti inflammatory and antibacterial properties of 925 silver allow Silverette® cups to be used with your prescribed treatment regimen. Because mastitis can worsen quickly, consult your doctor if you notice symptoms such as fever or a painful, swollen breast.
Milk blebs – Milk blisters or blebs are blocked nipple pores that appear as small white dots. By maintaining a moist, anti inflammatory environment, Silverette® cups may support healing. Nonetheless, any persistent blockage or pain should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
In short, many mothers use Silverette® cups to complement professional guidance for common breastfeeding issues, but you should always involve a healthcare provider if pain persists or you have concerns.
We recommended that Silverette® should be used during the lactation period for preventative measures. It is designed to be used in between nursing sessions, and is recommended to be worn continuously until breastfeeding is established without any pain or damage.
It can be used pre and postnatal as a preventative measure for sensitive nipples, as well as for nipples that have been damaged from expressing milk.
Silverette® nursing cups come in two sizes – Original (often called “regular”) and XL. For years the Original was the only option, so it became the “one size fits most” choice. Since the XL launched in 2020, many mothers have found that size to be the most comfortable fit.
Whichever size you choose, the cups work the same; the difference is purely the diameter, which affects comfort—not performance. The height (space between nipple and cup) stays constant. To accommodate breast growth during pregnancy and when your milk comes in, the manufacturer suggests adding a cup size to your current bra size. The Original is recommended if your adjusted bra size is C or smaller and your areola is less than 4.5 cm across. The XL suits D cups or larger and/or an areola 4.5 cm or more.
If your measurements fall on the borderline or you’re still unsure, it’s best to opt for the XL—slightly larger is usually more comfortable. Similarly, if you’re buying a gift and don’t want to ask about sizing, the XL is considered the safer “fits most” choice.
No matter which size you pick, the cups will still function properly. And if you’d like personalised advice, the Silverette team encourages you to get in touch; they’re happy to walk you through the options and help you select the right fit.
The cups are worn under your nursing bra. If you plan on using absorbent breast pads, simply place the breast pad over the Silverette® cups and your bra will hold everything in place.
- Express a couple of drops of milk into each cup and place the cup directly over the nipple, securing it with your nursing bra.
- Before breastfeeding, remove the cups and clean your nipples with warm water or a water wipe. After feeding, rinse the cups with warm water, pat them dry, and repeat step 1 in between feeds.

How to clean & care for your Silverette®
Over time, Silverette® cups may develop a yellowish patina. This is a normal result of the copper in the 925 silver alloy reacting with moisture and air. The cups remain safe and effective, and the discoloration is simply evidence that they are genuine sterling silver. To restore their shine, make a paste by mixing one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda with a few drops of water. Gently rub it over the cups, then rinse and pat them dry.
For further tips, see our Clean & Care page.
Silverette® cups naturally resist bacteria and fungi, so routine cleaning is simple. After each feed, rinse them with warm water; this is usually sufficient for hygiene. You can also use a mild hand wash soap if you prefer, but avoid harsh detergents, bleach, sterilising tablets or abrasive pads. If tarnish appears over time, follow the polishing instructions above using a bicarbonate of soda paste. For more detailed guidance, please visit our Clean & Care page.
